Businessmen stepping up to serve Guard

In the summer of 2007, Nate Dalton was headed for his job as chief operating officer with the Beverly investment firm Affiliated Managers Group, but his Swampscott friend and neighbor Michael Finer was going somewhere else — Iraq.
Finer is a lieutenant colonel in the 1-181 Infantry Battalion, Massachusetts National Guard, and his commitment would take him to the war zone for nearly a year. That summer, the two discussed the impact of his absence on his family and his business — Finer, also in the financial field, works for Major League Investments.
As a commanding officer, Finer was even more eager to describe the sacrifice deployment represents for his soldiers and their families.
It wasn't a conversation that Dalton, who has no military background himself, could easily forget.
